Offenbar gibt es bei einigen Postämtern in den USA Probleme, weil Sonderpoststempel zu früh angefordert werden und die Postämter zu diesem Zeitpunkt die Stempel noch gar nicht haben oder teilweise gar nicht wissen, dass ein Stempel in Planung ist. Darauf hat Rich Hoffner von der Universal Ship Cancellation Society (USCS) hingewiesen. Seine Mail hat mir Wolfgang Hechler freundlicherweise weitergeleitet. Offenbar kommen die frühzeitigen Anfragen hauptsächlich aus Europa.

Daher als Anhaltspunkt für alle Sammler:

Die Anfrage an das Postamt nicht früher als zwei Wochen vor dem Termin absenden. Alles andere ist zu früh!

Die Sonderpoststempel werden mindestens 30 Tage nach dem Termin noch angebracht. Dabei zählt nicht der Eingang, sondern das Datum des Poststempels. Oft wird diese Regelung sehr großzügig ausgelegt. Es besteht also keine Veranlassung, Anfragen Monate vor dem Termin abzusenden!

I made a call to Groton post office today. They just got the cancels in for JIMMY CARTER and TOLEDO and will be servicing collectors covers today and tomorrow. They had problems in getting approval to pay for them and had to resubmit several times. They had one complaint for me. People from overseas are sending covers too early.  He had four asking for the ALABAMA cancel. He had no idea what they wanted and on the first one cancelled it with their daily hand cancel. When three more arrived he set them aside until he could check with me. I told him that it was so far off I had not sent it to him yet. It will get submitted tomorrow, but folks from overseas should not send so early. About two weeks before would be OK, not two months early.   Rich
